1 . CONSTRUCTION
HULL NUMBER Oyster 825.07.
HULL CONSTRUCTION A composite construction of Fibre Reinforced Plastics (FRP) and sandwich materials, moulded in female tooling developed by Oyster, built under the close supervision of the Oyster Design Team. The FRP lay-up specification is calculated to meet and exceed the Det Norske Veritas (DNV) rules for light and high speed craft scantlings.
The hull is moulded using vinylester resin with the outer topside finished in a blue special NPG gelcoat, painted white, which has excellent UV resistance and waterproofing qualities, and is suitable for use in tropical environments. Vinylester resin is utilised for its impermeable properties and forms a strong matrix for the fibres.
Laminate material comprises a combination of E-glass, Kevlar and local carbon fibre specially designed for the yacht by Oyster’s structural engineers. This custom laminate of different fibres offers significant weight savings, strength, and stiffness advantages over a traditional Glass Reinforced Plastic (GRP) construction.
The topside laminate is a high-tech, PVC foam-cored, E-glass/carbon sandwich above the waterline, for additional strength, stiffness, and insulation. A vacuum bagging technique is used to ensure bonding of the sandwich laminate whilst the resins are curing.
Beneath the waterline, the hull features a monolithic (single-skin) laminate reinforced with a web of stringers, L-section beams, and floors. Combined with an arrangement of BS1088 standard marine ply, and glass/carbon/foam structural bulkheads, this produces a robust structure with excellent strength to weight quantities, and proven longevity.
The main V1/D1 chainplates are constructed in carbon fibre and are integrally bonded into the hull structure. Local reinforcement is applied at the keel recess, the keel longitudinals, mast bulkhead, P-bracket, forestay, and hull stringers.
Limber holes and tubes are installed at appropriate points. Stringers, bulkhead landings and floors are formed over inert polyurethane foam.
HULL FINISH Blue gel coat hull, painted in Awl Craft 2000 ‘Princess white’, with cove line and double boot top lines in ‘Light Grey’.
Hull epoxy primer painted and finished with self-polishing Seajet Platinum anti fouling in ‘Black’.
DECK CONSTRUCTION Moulded in GRP with a PVC foam cored structure for optimum stiffness, weight saving, and insulation.
In load-bearing areas the core is replaced with plywood or monolithic glass for additional strength, and all load-bearing fittings have backing plates.
L-section beams and foam cored frames with carbon unidirectional cappings provide additional strength and stiffness in load-bearing and other areas.
DECK FINISH Weather deck, cockpit seats, and sole areas planked with quarter-sawn teak and no visible fastenings. Locker hinges are recessed into the teak planking, where appropriate.
Deck structure and hatches modified for custom interior layout forward.
The deck edge incorporates a bulwark, which facilitates relatively flat side decks and provides a good foothold when working the yacht in a seaway. The top of this bulwark has a clean gel coat finish, giving a modern and stylish ‘rolled’ edge enhancing the sheer line.
Stanchions and cleats mounted on the bulwark.
Internal scupper drains installed along the deck edge.
KEEL High performance bulb (HPB) external lead keel.
RUDDER Twin spade rudders with substantial carbon/epoxy skinned PVC foam blades bonded to carbon/epoxy composite rudder stocks.
STERN DESIGN The stern design incorporates a flip-down transom, raised and lowered by hydraulic rams powered via the Lewmar Commander system, that creates an open platform for boarding a tender or for water sports.
The platform surface is finished with teak decking.
A stainless steel stairway with teak treads deploys automatically when the platform is lowered.
A demountable stainless steel bathing/boarding ladder with oval treads is provided, with stowage inside the lazarette.
Two demountable stainless steel tube ‘fender bars’ with cleats fit into sockets at the aft end of the bathing platform.
A custom watertight access door provides direct access from the bathing platform to the lazarette.
EURCD Built to comply with the requirements for Category A – Ocean. At over 24m length overall the Oyster 825 falls outside the scope of the EURCD, however the hull design and structure for this vessel have been designed using the Det Norske Veritas
(DNV) – High Speed and Light Craft Rule.
CHARTER CODING Built to MCA Category II with all associated safety equipment fitted, originally coded, but never chartered.
