Description of the Splinter by VKSJ: In our neighbouring country Germany a shepherd cruiser is also called "Ein Stecknadel". In that sense you could say that the Splinter is a needle in a haystack. The search for her background, country of origin, builder and designer has yielded absolutely nothing. Yet she is one, and that is the most important thing. Without running too great a risk of missing the mark, we can state that the Splinter is a B-22. No mahogany hull and no lead keel with a length of less than 9.5 m and a width which according to the rule of 1925 corresponds to that: 1.80 m. She will have been built according to the regulations in force at the time, in which the scantlings, fastenings and construction method per class were precisely prescribed, as well as the accommodation (seating height, number and size of berths etc.) Within the dimensions of the class, the design was almost free. The B-class of the 22m2 is a development that was mainly started by Gustav Estlander, one of the most important designers at that time. They wanted to keep the cost of such a boat somewhat under control so that it would be possible to sail it in a wider circle. Earlier, such a development was started in Finland with the design of the N-22 class, which also found support in Denmark and Norway. Estlander used in his first design of the B-22 the lines of the Mälar 22, a one-design class developed by him. The Mälar 22 can therefore be measured as a B-22. The most striking feature of the B-22, the Mälar 22 and the N-22 is the straight mast. The mast with the curved top was of course unnecessary and extremely expensive. So let's take a look at the Splinter itself. Unfortunately, no pictures under sail were made available, but the pictures that were provided show an elegant (how could it be otherwise) little yacht with all the characteristics of a small skerries. Long overhangs fore and aft, a strongly squat S-shaped bilge, which the owner probably calls a round bilge with an attached keel, with the rudder attached to the aft side of the keel. As ballast material the owner mentions iron/concrete. That would mean that under the Splinter a box keel is mounted, which is filled with concrete and punching caps. That does not seem obvious. The ballast weight will indeed be of cast iron, with the recesses for the keel bolts and trim filled with concrete or the like. The deck shows the usual arrangement, backstays with highfield tensioners, gangways of reasonable width alongside the cabin superstructure, which has a striking crown with convenient handrails. On the foredeck we find a large hatch. Remarkable is that the forestay is attached to the bow and that is not something you find on a cruiser from the late 20s. The ship is painted white, with a varnished mahogany superstructure and a grey non-slip deck. All very functional. The varnished cockpit has along folding benches with chests underneath. The cockpit edge is equipped with small stainless steel supported platforms for the genoa winches. Everything as it should be on a prewar boat in the here and now must sail.
