Engineered for Toughness:
FPB 78-1 COCHISE is the toughest of all the FPBs with a massive increase in the already extra strong hulls. She has five watertight bulkheads and double bottom.
The centerline plating is one inch/24mm thick. Outboard of this, from forward of the central water tight bulkhead to the rudders the plating goes to 5/8”/16mm (light green color in the nearby image). Elsewhere plating is 1/2”/12mm to above the chine waterline (pink color). Topsides are 8mm. Five feet/a meter and a half aft of the bow is a collision bulkhead. A stembar extends off the centerline girder in this collision containment area. This stembar is 1.75”/40mm thick and 10”/250mm deep. It and the topsides in this area are supported by five horizontal stiffeners (breasthooks) which are backed in the forepeak by deep web like topside frames.
Hull frames in forward forepeak are closer together and topside stiffeners are overbuilt. As a result of the size these deep webs double as shelves.
Hull, Deck & Superstructure Construction:

Engineered for Quiet:
COCHISE was conceived from the beginning to be exceptionally smooth running and noise free. This starts with the very thick aluminum plate extending (5/8”/16mm) extending under the engines, and over the propellers. Close framing in the way of the props further reduces natural harmonics.
Her massively thick use of EPDM foam for normal hull and deck insulation contributes to sound absorption. The fire control insulation in the engine room covers both bulkheads, hull sides, and the deck to reduce the amount of noise escaping. Air intake and exhaust vents are lined in EPDM foam and baffled to reduce noise on deck.
The engine exhaust systems include both Centrek aqua lifts and mufflers, the latter including a special remixing chamber that reduces the tendency for gas and water to separate.
Each interior bulkhead is specially engineered with airs space, sound dampening visco elastomeric sheet, and sound absorbing foam, and is mounted with isolation material.
Engineered for Maneuverability:
COCHISE takes the reputation of the FPB fleet for maneuverability to a new level. A combination of factors makes her so agile that the thruster is rarely used. The ability to put a very substantial amount of thrust against the rudders is one factor. The position and size of the rudders is another. Most important is the 42° angle either side of center which the rudders can attain in just seven seconds hard over to hard over. This extremely fast rudder travel coupled with the propeller thrust allows you to do things in tight spaces, with the wind pushing you against a lee shore, that most would consider impossible.
Carefully placed spring line cleats make aft and forward spring lines extremely effective for pulling the boat onto a dock. Two Lewmar 64 electric self-tailing winches, one forward and one aft, are used for dock lines and kedging.
If conditions are so bad that you cannot bring the boat alongside there’s another option. The anchoring bowsprit is designed to be pressed against pilings or the dock and in the most adverse conditions it often works to bring the bow in at right angles, hold it against the dock with the props, pass a breast line ashore or around the piling, and then back off and winch yourself onto the dock.

Systems Integration:
COCHISE is the first yacht to have carbon neutral capability at anchor, including air conditioning in many cruising environments. This is the result of many factors starting with the reduction of heat load through glazing, window films, window and hatch covers, and awnings. Another element it her massive EPDM insulation, more than twice previous FPBs. The availability of natural ventilation also plays a key role.
The solar array with 12 Sunpower panels is capable of producing up to 25kWh in a day, more than enough for daily operations. And then the heating and air conditioning comes into play. The Lithium-Ion battery bank is of more than sufficient size to carry the overnight loads of air conditioning the owner’s suite and the guest and crew suites.
And if solar conditions are poor the inherent efficiencies reduce generator time. A typical maximum generator run would be two hours a day.
Aside from the pleasure this minimal carbon foot print brings, and the ecological benefits, the daily fuel savings add up over time. This enhances range under power, and endurance at anchor. If there were a disruption in fuel supplies, with small changes in habits your endurance would be almost indefinite.
Other Mechanical Equipment:
COCHISE draws less than five feet/1.5m, and is happy drying out on a tidal river bottom, or on a grid.
COCHISE is a true expedition yacht, with huge range and endurance, and a proven resume designed for the adventurer who truly wants to explore the far reaches of the oceans in comfort, safety and functionality.
At a cruising speed of 10.5 knots an FPB 781 averages 250 miles a day on passage, and has a range of 6,100 nautical miles. Diesel fuel capacity is 4700 gallons/17,000 litres and freshwater storage is 1950 gallons /7100 liters with a watermaker capacity of up to 70 gallons/264 liters per hour. The fuel and water tanks are integral with the hull providing a lower center of gravity for improved performance and a double bottom with the accompanying safety associated therewith.
Oversize hydraulic Naiad stabilizer actuators coupled with stabilizer fins that were custom built by NAIAD for increased factors of safety contribute to the smooth ride, even in rough seas.
Looking across the walk-in engine room towards the aft starboard corner, this is an engine room that is a mechanic’s dream. It is accessible from aft deck, the swim step, and aft starboard head.
Typical of the systems engineering aboard COCHISE is the engine room air intake. Things to note:
Aft of the engine room is a watertight door with access to the new crew accommodation. This has an en-suite heads and shower compartment to starboard. Aft of this is a U-shaped seating area with table, microwave and sink. To port is a generous double berth with storage beneath. The crew area has another watertight door out onto the bathing platform and there is a large deck hatch with steps up to it to enable crew to access the aft deck easily when needed.
During the 2022 refit the batteries and associated systems were all changed to Lithium Ion. This included new solar charge controllers and associated mounting brackets, and new battery chargers for both 24V and 12V systems. New heavy feeds were fitted from the forepeak distribution box and to the Matrix, as well as to new deck winches. In order to compensate for the trim differential created by this change, Vectis Design were asked to advise on the amount of additional ballast needed. 5 tonnes of lead ingots were fitted in the sub floor between the tankage where the old batteries had been located.

Matrix Deck: The matrix deck was completely refitted during the 2022 refit. A sundeck was constructed aft of the matrix door with seating and stanchions all around with solid top bar for additional safety. In the interior of the Matrix, new handrails were fabricated and mechanically fastened to the mullions and overhead for security when at sea. The overhead linings are in Serge Ferrari sound dampening upholstery (Alphalia Silent AW Range Alaska). QUIK lighting is fitted controlled by Maretron Digital Switching. The exterior guttering for the Matrix was modified for great efficiency. An awning over the aft sun deck was added with carbon support poles. A new helm station with leather wrapped uppers and 2 nav seats was built with Maretron digital switching system and 4 TVs to display navigational information. At the helm there are 5 Maretron DSM 410 touch screen displays. New Eisinglass was fitted on all Matrix deck sides and also around the stairs onto the aft deck providing a storage area beneath. A new door was also fitted providing access onto the new aft sun deck aft of the Matrix with the solar panels re-sited onto the top of the Matrix. The sundeck was designed by Vectis Marine Design and a support pillar was built to receive the new structure. The Matrix has sound and vibration isolation, provided a quiet area with only 58 decibels underway. Nova Interiors fabricated a L-shaped seating area and a table by Kirolite which has telescopic legs and is finished in limed oak with a chaise lounge to starboard and a wet bar aft to starboard which can also be accessed from the sundeck. The wet bar has an Isotherm BI-92 refrigerator, 3 tray sink with dividers and storage. McKinnon & Harris upholstery has been used on the Matrix. Both the Matrix and the sundeck have FlexiTeek bleached teak soles. A 24v heater was installed below the helm with directional vents. iPad docking was fitted at the helm station for additional informational display.
Main Deck (Interior):
The main saloon, a true FPB ‘Great Room’ with 360 degree vision, is a light and airy place for entertaining, cooking, relaxing, watch keeping, and living within the marine environment. There simply is nothing comparable.
The lower helm mirrors the upper helm layout for ease of operation. Remotely controlled zoned blinds enhance privacy while at the dock and reduce solar glare and heat load at anchor. A 55” TV hides is concealed behind doors (this is on a lift and can be used up or in its stowed position for entertainment – it can also display the navigational or onboard Maretron information). The Great Room main table is a Kirolite table fitted 2022 of limed oak and is mounted on multi axis hardware allowing great flexibility of use.
Dimmable LED lighting and rope lights create the perfect ambience at night.
The Great Room offers a large fully equipped galley to port with induction hob, oven, dishwasher, loads of storage, upright refrigeration and two under counter freezers with LED lighting. Counter seating for two is available for both eating and supervising the chef.
In the aft starboard corner of the Great Room there is an alcove with a desk. The main AC and DC electrical switch panes together with engine start/stop, genset start and stop, plus four Maretron multi data display meters are located here. A narrow, vertical bulkhead divides this area from the galley.
As you step out of the Great Room, at the main deck level, there is a large athwartships counter, with sink, electric BBQ and storage beneath the stairs leading to the Matrix Deck. This area is covered and there is custom overhead fishing gear storage and storage for the carbon passerelle all executed in the 2022 refit.
To port of the Matrix stairs there is an enclosed space used for storage of lifesaving equipment. It also houses the refrigeration compressors which are both fan and raw water-cooled.
Accommodation Deck:
The accommodation deck has the owner and guest living spaces clustered near the pitch center for maximum comfort upwind.
A huge forepeak with is forward with storage cabinets above and plenty of storage space for neat organization of critical gear, toys, and, under the aluminium decking, for spares. A forward chain bin with fresh water wash-down and overboard drains holds 300 feet of Grade 43 chain. Air conditioning skids for the forepeak, Owners’ Stateroom and Great Room are located here with easy access for service as are the Headhunter potable water pumps.
Aft of the large forepeak area is an upper and lower berth guest cabin with large en-suite head compartment. This cabin was fitted during the 2022 refit. The joinery was executed by JS Marine in the same style as the rest of COCHISE, in high gloss white. The trim is in American limed white oak including a stairway to the upper berth for children. The en-suite heads compartment has corian surfaces with stainless steel taps and shower and a Vetus Electric Flush freshwater toilet. The flooring is in Kardean as with the rest of the yacht. The area is fully air conditioned with a new Dometic 6,000 BTU unit.
A hallway runs from this cabin to on the starboard side with storage outboard to and the double doors to the owners’ stateroom are found to port.
The owners’ stateroom is has a magical mix of comfort, security, and visual ambiance. A wonderful spot to curl up with a book if you want to escape. And lovely to just look at as you fall asleep. A new book case and overhead shades and screen for each hatch were fitted during the 2022 refit.
It has a large centreline double berth with bed side tables port and starboard. There is a basin with large vanity area, separate toilet enclosure and a large shower with seating which also doubles as a bath.
The cabin also has large vertical storage lockers along the port side, a dresser, large hanging locker with storage shelves and lots of drawers under the large berth, with dimmable LED lights and rope lighting.
For security, hand grab bars and provisions for overhead hand lines are strategically placed.
The berth can be split into 2 single berths with a lee cloth to divide the berths.
Outside the owners’ stateroom there is a dedicated space for use as the owners’ office or as a media centre. It has a computer, two monitors, a printer and multiple drawers for storage of cruising guides and other documents and data.
There are 2 further guest cabins aft with heads en-suite heads including separated full sized shower stalls with seats.
The Guest suites feature large berths, under berth drawers for storage, vanity area with mirror, hanging locker, cupboard and drawer.
Port Guest Cabin:
Summary of Accommodation Finishes:
Window Coverings:
Powered window coverings are fitted in the Great Room.
The companionway also features a port side systems room that houses the security system black boxes, fuel transfer manifold, Maretron system black boxes, hydraulic crash pump and manifold, bilge pump, house battery ventilation fan and coffer-dam with access to the port side stabilizer. Access to the starboard side stabilizer cofferdam is under the stairs.
Aft of the guest staterooms is the walk-in engine room. It is an engineer’s dream and the sophisticated owners pride and joy. It is accessible from the aft crew area and aft starboard head.
Crew Accommodation (Aft):
Aft of the engine room is a watertight door to the Crew cabin. This is finished to exactly the same standard as the rest of the yacht with en-suite heads compartment with shower and a Bomar hatch for ventilation to starboard as you enter from the engine room. Aft to starboard is a spacious L-shaped seating area with adjustable table and with a sink and cooking facilities. To port is a generous double berth, hanging space for clothing and there is lots of storage.
There are teak steps up to a Freeman Marine door in the aft deck. There is a Lewmar 10 hatch within it to provide natural light to the crew cabin ({also with shade and screen). However once of the best features of this cabin is the door that accesses straight onto the generous swim step.
Dinghy:
A 24VDC captive Warn winch for synthetic line running through a two to one tackle does the heavy lifting. Should the captive winch fail, the other end of the halyard can be lead to the Lewmar 65 Kedge winch aft, the manual winch near the bitter end of the line, or you can replace the winch with its twin in the other aft deck locker. If the dinghy had to be launched by hand it only needs to be lifted four inches/10cm to slide out.
Bringing the dinghy back aboard has been developed with an eye towards rolling anchorages.
Swim Step:
The starboard side is the flammables storage area with room for as many as a dozen 5 gallon/20 liter plastic containers.
Extending aft, on the hull edge is a cassette like vertical storage area where the stainless steel flopper stoppers are carried. The starboard locker at present contains two 90m300’ coils of 3/8” 9.6mm high modulus rope. The rope drums are on spindles and easily feed out the rope when used for kedging or as shore fasts. This is where spare props live when they are carried on a special spindle. On occasion some docking material may be stored. The other use is as a place store garbage.
