The boats designed by the Swedish naval architect Carl Gustaf Pettersson still appeal to the imagination today. Pettersson's designs are still a clear inspiration for contemporary yacht designers. We see Pettersson's designs in several modern boats. However, "Grisslan" is by the master himself and that can be seen in the gracious and harmonious lines of this yacht. The yacht was built in 1932 for the Swedish landowner M. Hensmar. Grisslan is a Swedish fishing village located in the strait between Vågön and Grisselön in the Bothnic Sea.
The current owner of "Grisslan" is a lover and connoisseur of classic yachts. He bought "Grisslan" after a long search in Sweden and had the boat restored to its original state in 1999. Since then, this unique yacht has always been on a covered berth and has only been used on occasions.
The designer Pettersson was born in 1876 and when he died in 1953 he had more than 1,100 designs to his name. Pettersson left his mark on the design of motorboats. Boats which he did not design, but which are characterized by a port deck that slopes strikingly towards the gangway, are referred to as 'Pettersson boat'.
Not only is the designer of "Grisslan" renowned, also Fröberg's yard in Lidingö (Stockholm), where the boat was built under construction number 64 in 1932, is known for its high quality. Pettersson's designs were built at several yards, but Pettersson said about Fröberg that no inspection was required on delivery. "Grisslan" is a fine example of Fröberg's building quality. No wonder, then, that the "Grisslan" built from Hondoeras mahogany is still in a very solid condition.
"Grisslan" was built as a day boat for a company that was comfortably sailed by a crew. The guests sat comfortably in the saloon with open aft or on the comfotable couch at the back of the cockpit. The crew consisted of a skipper and a stewardess who had their place at the helm. Through the doors in the front of the saloon, the stewardess was able to serve the guests the necessary refreshments. The foreship has no accommodation as the engine is located here. Apart from an optimal weight distribution, this has the advantage that the guests only get minimal engine noise.
The engine is a five cylinder Beta Marine diesel of 62 hp. The English Beta Marine uses just like the French Nanni the indestructible Kubota engine as a base. Advantage of the Beta Marine version is that it has an extra oil cooler. The engine was newly fitted during the extensive restoration of "Grisslan" in 1999 and fits very well with the character of "Grisslan" and has only had about 250 sailing hours since then. The boat sails easily at low speeds and reaches an impressive top speed of about 14 knots very comfortably.
