The Loosdrechtse Plassen
The Loosdrechtse Plassen are known as 'the water garden of the Netherlands’. Sailing is perhaps the most important form of water sports on Loosdrecht. Many marinas organise various sailing competitions throughout the year. A unique sailing regatta is the '6 hours of Loosdrecht' where participants sail as many nautical miles as possible on the Loosdrechtse Plassen. The Loosdrechtse Plassen consists of 5 lakes. These are the Breukeleveense- or Stille Plas and the Vuntus (limited depth and only accessible for small boats), the Loenderveenseplas (no sailing water) and the Wijde Blik (deep water with recreational beach). The Loosdrechtse Plassen can be reached via the river Vecht. From the Vecht there is passage via the manually operated locks Kraaienestersluis and Weersluis in Breukelen and the manned lock Mijndense Sluis in Loenen. Via the Hilversum Canal you can reach Loosdrecht via the Raaisluis lock in Kortenhoef.
Diversity of water sports
The most practiced water sport on the Loosdrecht lakes is sailing. Tender or sloop sailing is a popular successor. This can also be seen in the layout of the surrounding marinas. But speed boating is also popular here. As one of the few areas in the Central Netherlands, owners of a fast boat with an exemption can sail fast at the indicated times. Speed boating is forbidden on the Fifth (recreational) Lake between the island of Meent and the Strook. On the Fourth Lake there is a water ski area with a ramp that is frequently used by water skiers and wakeboarders. A new popular water sport is suppen (Stand Up Paddling). More and more water sports companies around Loosdrecht now offer SUP boards and packages in addition to the regular boat rental. Ideal to discover the Kievitsbuurt and Trekgaten. Recreation on the islands of Loosdrecht
The Loosdrechtse Plassen offer numerous small and large islands on which day recreation and overnight stays are possible. The island of Marcus Pos on the Second Lake has a small mooring area, with a toilet facility and a sand-beach on the island. Between the Third and Fourth Lake is the recreational island Weer. This island offers various mooring or accommodation places on two sides. Recreational island Weer has no toilet facility or sand-beach. The well-known and largest island Meent between the Fourth and Fifth Lake is a big crowd attraction with its large sand-beach and 'de Kom' as a sheltered harbour. Eiland Meent is suitable for all water sports enthusiasts and offers a large sandy beach and a separate toilet facility and snack bar. It is also possible to spend the night here on the boat.
