Nature area the Lauwersmeer
Due to the closure of the Wadden Sea, the Lauwersmeer National Park has blossomed into a beautiful nature reserve and habitat for numerous special animal species. Birdwatchers in particular can see special bird species such as the spoonbill, white-tailed eagle or harrier. For many birds, the Lauwersmeer is an intermediate station for wintering areas or breeding grounds. You will also find large grazers such as Konik horses and Scottish Highlanders to maintain the Lauwersmeer area in a natural way.
Sailing on the Lauwersmeer
Because the Lauwersmeer consists largely of a nature reserve, there are some restrictions for water sports. For example, there are several areas where it is not allowed to sail and a maximum speed of 12 km/h applies. With a surface area of 24 km² and various islands, the Lauwersmeer is very suitable for day recreation, but also for longer trips with a sailing yacht or motor yacht. The lake is especially popular among windsurfers and kitesurfers. The Lauwersmeer is not equally deep everywhere. The channels are therefore equipped with buoyage buoys. Outside these channels, the creeks and moorings are shallow. Here canoeists and small motorboats can enjoy places where larger boats cannot come.
Sailing routes around the Lauwersmeer
From the Lauwersmeer there are several places and nice sailing routes to discover in the direction of the Wadden Sea, Groningen and Friesland.
A visit to the surrounding villages of Lauwersoog, Zoutkamp, Oostmahorn, Dokkum and Kollum is also highly recommended. Dokkum can be reached via the Dokkumer Diep and Dokkumer Grootdiep. From the Lauwersmeer this can be done in 3 hours. This includes 2 locks and 3 bridges. Kollum can be reached via the Dokkumer Diep and Zijlsterrijd in just under 2.5 hours with 2 locks and 3 bridges on the route. Via Zoutkamp and the Reitdiep a sailing route to Groningen is also possible. This trip is ideal for motorboats and takes about 5.25 hours. Only 1 lock and 5 bridges can be crossed on this route. A trip to Schiermonnikoog can be made from Lauwersoog in more than 1 hour. You will come across 1 bridge and 1 lock.
