The Turf Route can be sailed in various ways, such as a short or long route. This route runs partly through the head of Overijssel, Drenthe and mainly Southeast Friesland. While sailing this route you will pass many bridges and locks, some of which you will also have to operate yourself. The route also runs through various beautiful nature reserves such as the National Parks De Weerribben, Dwingelderveld, Drents-Friese Wold and De Oude Venen (Alde Feanen). The Turf Route originated from the extraction of peat in the 16th century and the digging of canals to transport this peat. Standing Mast Route or SMR
The Standing Mast Route (SMR) is a mapped out route for sailing ships without having to lower their mast. This route crosses the Netherlands without sailing the North Sea. The route runs from the South Holland Delta to Groningen. A large part of the Standing Mast Route goes via the Markermeer and the IJsselmeer. The part that runs through Friesland enters the IJsselmeer via the villages of Lemmer, Leeuwarden, Dokkum and Groningen and finally reaches Delfzijl.
From Friesland, the Standing Mast Route starts in Dokkum with a partial round trip around Leeuwarden, which then ends in Terherne via Grou and Akkrum. This trip takes about 4 hours. Do you have plenty of time? Then expand the route to a visit to one of the Wadden Islands. Sailing on the Wadden Sea is a unique experience with the dry fall at low tide.
For a well-prepared sailing trip via the Standing Mast Route, you can find information on the website vaarweginformatie.nl about possible obstructions and current operating times of locks and bridges on the route. Here you will find all sailing routes in Friesland.
