What is a catamaran?

Sailboats with more than one hull, are called multihull sailboats (multi means several).
An example of a multi-hull sailboat is a catamaran or trimaran. A catamaran is a boat with two hulls, where the weight is carried by two symmetrical floats. A trimaran has three hulls, with a stable hull in the center and a hull on each side to stabilize the boat.

Buying a multihull or catamaran sailboat

If you are hesitant about buying a catamaran or trimaran sailboat, you should carefully weigh the advantages and disadvantages. A disadvantage may be finding a berth, but a big advantage is the high speed that can be achieved compared to monohull sailboats. Also, multi-hull sailboats are often lighter than single-hull boats, they are much more stable and they glide through the water easier. For a sporty trip on the water, a catamaran or trimaran is a good choice.
Large catamaran sailing yachts are particularly popular in the Mediterranean area. These catamarans are equipped with a cabin and all contemporary luxuries, making them ideal for distant and seagoing trips, vacations and speed sailing.
